A Luxury Safari Elopement in South Africa: Kendra & Marquise
Kendra and Marquise traveled from Michigan to South Africa for a private three-night safari elopement that was completely focused on the two of them.
They knew they wanted somewhere small, private, and surrounded by wildlife. They were not looking for the most luxurious lodge possible. Instead, they wanted an authentic safari experience where they could feel close to the bush and where animals could move freely around the property.
That led them to Isambane, an intimate lodge in the Balule Nature Reserve.
Why Kendra and Marquise Chose Isambane
One of the biggest things Kendra and Marquise wanted was privacy.
Isambane is a very small lodge, so it gave them the intimate atmosphere they were looking for. They also loved that the camp is unfenced, allowing wildlife to move through and around the property naturally.
That was important to them because they did not want to feel separated from the safari experience once they returned from a game drive. They wanted to wake up in the bush, hear the animals around them, and feel immersed in the reserve throughout the entire stay.
The lodge itself is more rustic and authentic than some of the ultra-luxury properties I work with, but that actually suited them really well.
Rather than spending the majority of their budget on the most expensive suite, they chose a lodge that gave them the privacy and wildlife experience they cared about. That also gave them more freedom to invest in the wedding details that mattered most to them.
Creating a More Elevated Wedding at a Rustic Safari Lodge
Kendra especially cared about the visual side of the wedding.
She wore a beautiful dress that felt elegant without looking out of place in the bush. Their florals were bright and colorful, with shades of pink, orange, and blush that stood out beautifully against the more neutral safari landscape.
Because the lodge itself was simpler, we could put more attention into the wedding details.
I arranged the florals, hair and makeup, photography, lodging, transfers, couples massage, safari logistics, and the other pieces of their stay. We also created a dinner setup with flowers afterward so the evening still felt special even though it was only the two of them.
It is a good example of why choosing a more affordable or rustic safari lodge does not mean the wedding itself has to feel basic.
You can decide where you want to put the budget.
For some couples, that means choosing the most luxurious lodge possible. For others, it means staying somewhere smaller and putting more into the flowers, clothing, photography, or other details they care about.
A Private Symbolic Ceremony Beside the River
Kendra and Marquise chose a symbolic ceremony, so there was no legal paperwork or formal officiant process involved in the vows themselves.
It was just the two of them.
We chose a ceremony location near the river, which gave them a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. Even better, there were hippos in the water behind them while they exchanged their vows.
That is one of those details you simply cannot stage.
You can choose a beautiful location and create the right setting, but once you are on safari, the wildlife becomes part of the experience on its own terms.
Having hippos in the river while they said their vows made the ceremony feel even more connected to the place they had traveled so far to experience.
A Warm, Cloudy Wedding Day
Their wedding day was cloudy, but it was still warm and comfortable.
For photography, the softer light was actually beautiful. It gave us a very even look throughout the day and worked especially well with the bright florals and Kendra’s dress.
Not every safari wedding needs a huge glowing sunset to photograph beautifully.
Some of my favorite wedding days have had clouds, a little rain, or changing weather throughout the afternoon. What matters most is working with whatever the bush gives us rather than expecting the day to look one specific way.
Wildlife Throughout Their Three-Night Safari
Kendra and Marquise had an incredible amount of wildlife during their stay.
They saw elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, and African wild dogs.
Seeing wild dogs is always exciting because they are not something you can expect to find on every safari. Getting to experience them during such a short stay made the trip even more memorable.
One of my favorite quieter moments happened during a morning safari stop.
We stopped for coffee in the bush, and giraffes were moving through the area nearby. It was such a simple moment, but those are often the ones couples remember afterward.
You are not always doing something dramatic on safari. Sometimes you are standing with a cup of coffee while giraffes move through the landscape in front of you.
That is part of what makes a multi-day safari wedding feel so different from a traditional wedding day.
A Safari Elopement That Felt Like Them
Kendra and Marquise were so much fun to photograph.
Marquise is incredibly funny and quick-witted, so there was always something happening between the two of them. Kendra is naturally very comfortable in front of the camera, and because they both have modeling experience, photographing them together felt really effortless.
Their personalities also balanced each other really well.
There were beautiful, polished portraits, but there were also plenty of moments where they were laughing, joking around, and simply enjoying being on safari together.
That is what I want the photography to reflect.
The goal is never to turn the entire trip into a photoshoot. I want couples to have the experience first and let the photographs come from what is actually happening around them.
Dinner for Two After Their Safari Ceremony
After the ceremony and portraits, we had a private dinner setup waiting for them.
The florals carried through into the evening and gave the table a more elevated feel without turning the lodge into something it was not.
It was still intimate and still very much a safari experience.
There was no large reception, no room full of guests, and no strict sequence of speeches and dances. Instead, Kendra and Marquise could sit down together and enjoy dinner after spending the day getting married in the bush.
That slower ending is one of the things I love most about safari elopements.
There is time to actually enjoy the day.
What Their Safari Elopement Included
Even though they chose a smaller, more rustic lodge, Kendra and Marquise still wanted the experience itself to be easy.
I arranged their accommodation, transfers, photography, hair and makeup, florals, couples massage, private safari vehicle, ceremony details, dinner setup, and the other logistics surrounding the trip.
That is the part of safari elopements that can feel overwhelming when couples first begin researching them.
You might know you want to get married on safari, but then suddenly you are trying to figure out which reserve to choose, which lodge works for a wedding, how to get there, where to find local vendors, and how everything fits together.

Choosing the Right Safari Lodge for Your Elopement
Kendra and Marquise are also a good example of why the “best” safari lodge is different for every couple.
They wanted privacy, an unfenced camp, a smaller lodge, and an authentic connection to the wildlife. They were comfortable choosing a more rustic property so they could invest more into the wedding details they cared about.
Another couple might care much more about a huge suite, private plunge pool, spa, fine dining, or ultra-luxury service.
Neither approach is better.
The important part is choosing a lodge that matches how you actually want the trip to feel.
